Event design for Gladstone’s scientific retreat

Challenge
Gladstone’s biennial scientific retreat brings together around 400 researchers for two days of talks, workshops, and collaboration at a scenic location in Pacific Grove. For the 2023 event, the goal was to visually express the theme “Seizing the Momentum” in a way that felt energetic, forward-looking, and grounded in science.
The design needed to generate excitement among attendees while reflecting the retreat’s role as a serious scientific forum and a catalyst for new ideas.
Solution
I created an animation inspired by the concept of stochastics—used to describe momentum at quantum scales. Animated lines build and layer over time, visually representing how momentum accumulates and becomes self-sustaining, echoing the retreat’s theme of “Seizing the Momentum.”
To reinforce the scientific context, I incorporated a grid background referencing lab notebooks, while also enhancing the sense of forward motion. The concept translated well across motion and static formats, allowing for a consistent experience in both digital and print. A monochromatic palette, drawn from Gladstone’s brand colors, provided cohesion and a clean, modern aesthetic.
Outcomes
The retreat drew record attendance, with over 450 participants—a 13% increase from the previous event. The visual identity helped build excitement leading up to the retreat and created a sense of cohesion across materials and experiences. Attendees reported feeling energized and inspired, and the event successfully fostered new connections across labs and disciplines.
The design received positive feedback for its clarity, creativity, and alignment with the scientific theme. It contributed to a memorable and well-organized event that strengthened internal community ties and laid the groundwork for ongoing collaboration.
