The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy renovated the Dining Hall on the island of Alcatraz in 2016. To shield the main space from the dust, a partition wall was installed.

The Challenge
Create an engaging historical display for Alcatraz visitors during renovation work.

The Solution
I made many visits to Alcatraz to visit the dining hall and determine the best method for creating the wall design.

I sourced historical and stock images, collated statistics, designed the overall layout, and worked with a sign-making company to have the piece produced and installed. We also had the grey paint above the mural Pantone-matched at Benjamin Moore.

Outcomes
Helped visitors connect with the history of Alcatraz in a visually compelling way that complemented the accompanying audio tour.

The final banner measured around 87' wide by 9' high, the largest environmental piece I’ve worked on so far.
